Alpine mailman c.1895, Photograph by Charles Kerry.
When heavy snow falls stopped the horse post in the Australian Alps
the mail was usually carried by men on snow shoes (skis).

The Mailman shown here is Jimmy Larkins of Adaminaby. His family have had a long history in the district, who also had a coach & carrier run to Kiandra. This photo was taken east of Sawyers Hill as the road was impassable from there to Kiandra in winter. Kiandra residents would pick up the mail from here (information provided by Ross Ball).
